Character Information
Name: Sasori Akasuna
Codename: Puppeteer (Akatsuki codename)
Series/Source: Naruto
Age: 16
Gender: Male
Role: Student, former member of the Akatsuki

Background: Born in Arizona, Sasori's youngest days were maybe the only time he was genuinely happy; his parents, both engineers themselves, readily encouraged his budding curiosity about machines and how they worked.

It soon became apparent, however, that Sasori's affinity for technological devices went beyond normal human genius. For one thing, when Sasori took apart a device to see how it worked, as many budding geeks do, he could not only put it back together, but it worked better than it had to begin with. Not bad for a toddler.

Maybe he would have simply turned out as an engineer if he had not attended a puppet show at the age of four and been captivated by the beautifully crafted marionettes. They were truly works of art, and he wanted to create something that amazing himself. It was then that he realized that he wanted to be an artist, and so he began to turn his natural talents with machines towards the creation of his own special brand of art, what he later began to call technopuppets.

Once he was tested and found to be carrying the X-gene, his parents intended to place him in the right environment to nurture his talents when he was ready to begin schooling. However, those plans were never to be, as both of them died in a car accident soon after he turned five, and he was sent to live with his grandmother, Chiyo.

Unsure of how to deal with raising such a unique child, Chiyo steadfastly refused to accept that her grandson was a mutant; after all, her son had been a technical genius, so it was only natural her grandson would follow in his footsteps. She insisted that Sasori was normal, and that he would live a normal life and attend a normal school just like everyone else in their family had.

Unsurprisingly, Sasori felt incredibly stifled in such an environment that was far below his intellectual level. He had tremendous difficulty connecting with his peers because they all seemed to be so stupid; for their part, the other students bullied and rejected him, so he withdrew both emotionally and socially. He studied in his own time to make up for the lack of challenge at school, voraciously reading the engineering and other technical books and plans his parents had left behind. Thanks to this self-study, by the time he was twelve he'd developed his first technopuppets, controlled by energy strings.

Naturally, as many geeks do when they build something cool, Sasori posted about it on the Internet, so it wasn't long before recruiters from high-tech companies and government agencies came calling at the Akasuna home. His grandmother refused any offers, telling them all to come back once he'd graduated from college, to his immense frustration.

His work then caught the eye of a member of the mutant mercenary organization known as the Akatsuki, Orochimaru, who soon contacted Sasori privately and offered him a chance to make the most of his talents. After feeling held back for years by his environment and resentful of his only living relative for it, Sasori leapt at the chance to finally show his greatness to the world, and, not really realizing just what he was getting himself into, ran away from home and joined the Akatsuki.

At first it seemed like a dream come true; finally, Sasori felt like he was being challenged, both by the difficult training he received, and the opportunity to work on his projects completely unhindered. He was put to work developing numerous gadgets and other weapons, and was later working on subsystems for one of the shadowy Leader's top secret projects.

While most of the other members seemed to be standoffish, he developed a tentative friendship with one that was relatively closer to his age, Itachi Uchiha. He also developed a rather...unique, but stable working relationship with his second partner, Deidara. (OOC Note: I'm planning to keep this aspect of his background a bit vague for the time being, as I'm more than happy to change/work out details with anyone who wants to app Deidara.)

However, he was in for a rude awakening when he went on his first mission and discovered just what kind of organization he'd gotten himself involved with. He had no choice but to do what he had to do to complete his missions, up to and including killing people. To cope, he withdrew himself even more deeply, suppressing his troubled feelings as best as he could.

It was only when Itachi had (seemingly) died that Sasori made the resolution to leave the Akatsuki after four years in its ranks, and later allowed himself to be captured by the authorities while on a mission. While in custody, he was approached by Xavier, who convinced him to cooperate fully and divulge as much information as he could on the Akatsuki; in exchange, Sasori was sent to the Institute both for his own protection, and to offer him a second chance. It doesn't seem as though he's particularly thrilled to be here, but at least it's better than prison...

Personality: A narcissist who prides himself on his self-control, Sasori isn't always the most pleasant guy to hang around with, to put it mildly. His time in the Akatsuki and his upbringing in general have made him rather cynical and sarcastic. He isn't at all shy about pointing out the flaws in others, and will openly express contempt for those he considers beneath him. He's a creature of habit and a bit of a control freak, bordering on OCD when it comes to his neatfreak tendencies; people who are lazy, messy, careless, or make him waste time better spent on his projects will tend to drive him up the wall.

Even so, he can be quite cordial with those who earn his respect, and will offer understated praise to those he feels deserves it. As art is truly the central focus of his existence, he will immediately be drawn to anyone who shows similar artistic leanings, and greatly enjoys debating artistic philosophy.

He can be very secretive, and tends to maintain a pokerface most of the time; the only emotions he allows himself to show freely are usually irritation, contempt, or amusement, although his youth means his mask may occasionally slip. His emotional control extends to stressful/combat situations, where he's usually able to maintain a cool head and not let feelings like anger or fear get the better of him. Unsurprisingly, he is rather suspicious of telepaths, empaths, and others who are able to read the true thoughts and feelings he hides behind his carefully constructed facade.

He's also highly observant, scrutinizing and analyzing his surroundings at all times. However, emotions are a major weak point for him; he isn't the best at understanding other's feelings and responding to them effectively. He's just plain inept and awkward when it comes to anything even close to romantic relationships, and has the unfortunate affliction of blushing rather easily when it comes to these sorts of topics.

While his demeanor can be rather offputting, deep down there's a lonely, sensitive kid who's afraid to reach out to others out of fear of getting hurt again, but craves human contact and friendship. It's a side of himself that he considers a weakness, and he tries to suppress it as much as he can; his Akatsuki experiences only exacerbated this view, so he's lately been considering resorting to more radical measures to rid himself entirely of emotions.

His feelings for Chiyo are mixed. While he greatly resents her for her treatment of him and has thus far avoided contact with her whenever possible, he still cares about her on a deeper level; part of the reason he was reluctant to leave the Akatsuki was to protect her, since her whereabouts were known to the organization, putting her at risk.

Appearance: A bit short at 5'4”, with short, messy red hair and heavy-lidded, grayish-brown eyes. He has an attractive, boyish face that makes him look a little younger than his 16 years. At first glance, he looks almost perpetually drowsy, but the careful intensity with which he observes his surroundings belies that initial impression.

His body seems normal enough for a healthy (if a little scrawny) teenager his age except for the seams on his forearms, evidence of the implants in his arms that generate the energy strings he uses to control his puppets.

Despite his social ineptitude, he does put some thought into his appearance; he favors darker and more neutral colors, coats (long ones only when it's cold, because he's most certainly not goth or emo, thankyouverymuch,) t-shirts, button-downs, pullovers, and jeans. His unruly hair is the only thing that doesn't conform to his neat and fastidious image, but not for lack of trying. He may occasionally be sighted wearing glasses when doing fine detail work or reading, but whether he actually needs them or if it's simply an affectation is difficult to say.

He also seems to have retained the odd habit from his Akatsuki days of painting his fingernails a dark blue-green.

Powers: Besides his technopathy, Sasori's other mutant ability is superhuman dexterity, making it possible for him to manipulate his puppets with amazing speed and precision using only twitches of his fingers.

While he isn't as accomplished at hand to hand fighting, the combat training he received in the Akatsuki, along with his natural nimbleness, generally allows him to hold his own long enough to evade and put some distance between himself and his opponents so that he can make use of his puppets more effectively. He's also had a bit of standard ninja training along the lines of stealth, infiltration, etc. but he isn't nearly as accomplished in these areas as other Akatsuki members such as Itachi, considering he's only had around four years worth of training and combat experience. His relative weakness at close range compared to his Akatsuki associates was what originally drove him to build Hiruko. Overall he is far more dangerous when using his puppets to fight at close range rather than his own body.

The rest of his abilities stem from his puppets and the other tech he's developed. The energy strings he uses to control his creations stem from cybernetic implants in his hands and forearms. These strings have have the ability to control/lift/manipulate inanimate objects roughly human-sized and smaller with a high level of speed and precision; he also can use them in a similar manner on unconscious or consenting living creatures. Any attempt to struggle will easily break his control, however.

While in the Akatsuki, he built an armored puppet called Hiruko that he pilots from within when out in the field on missions. While the puppet itself is relatively slow due to its heavy armor, it makes use of needle projectiles and a lightning-fast stinger equipped tail that can also exert a powerful crushing force on anything in its grasp. Both stinger and needles are coated with a paralyzing toxin that allows him to incapacitate opponents with just a scratch.

Most of his other puppets were left behind when he was captured except for the third iteration of his Kazekage puppet. Like Hiruko, this puppet also uses needle projectiles, with the addition of several other poison delivery mechanisms, such as a poison gas cloud emitter and poisoned blades that pop out of the puppet's forearms. He's also been developing a magnetic field emitter for this puppet, but he's still working out the details on how he'd actually use it....

While not at the superhuman level, Sasori is also quite intelligent, having inherited some of his parents' more human genius.

RP Samples
First-person sample:
This is Sasori. As a recent arrival here, I'm being pressured to make this announcement in the name of socialization with fellow students. However, after observing your ridiculous behavior on the network, I've decided that the vast majority of you are complete idiots that are unworthy of my attention. Therefore I'd appreciate it if you'd avoid inflicting your stupidity on me in person, as I've already endured more than enough of it virtually.

Those of you that aren't completely worthless may be hearing from me in the future, but at present I have important projects that I need to attend to, so I simply don't have time to waste on such foolishness.

Third-person sample:
Hiruko plodded through the alley and towards its assigned position, painfully slow. Within the technopuppet's cramped cockpit, Sasori sighed; he really needed to address this particular design flaw in the near future. Perhaps his decision to err so far on the side of defense had been a bit misguided.

It was just one of the other decisions he'd made that he was recently reevaluating. While he twitched a finger and shot out a poisoned needle that silently incapacitated the warehouse's back entrance guard, he considered the one that had been weighing heavily on his mind for some time, namely his decision to join the Akatsuki to begin with.

It wasn't the killing. Really, it wasn't. He could handle that, could crush the part of him that felt horror and disgust down until it was almost nonexistent and perform the job as quickly and as cleanly as possible.

At least, long enough for him to complete the mission and get back to base, until he fell asleep and the nightmares started again. But still, that was good enough; Sasori could definitely handle that, since nobody knew about that anyways except—

Well, Itachi was dead, so nobody else knew about them now. But still, that wasn't anything Sasori couldn't handle on his own; he didn't need anyone to talk to about that anymore, really.

His eyes narrowed. Itachi going off and dying just proved what Sasori already knew: relying on other people for anything was a mistake, they always let you down. Always.

Finally in position, he sent the signal to his partner and waited for the explosions.

No, it definitely wasn't any of that sort of thing that was making him change his mind about all this. It was simply that he'd always felt he was destined for greater things, for showcasing his art to the world. The Akatsuki was simply wasting his talents, that's all.

And when the explosions went off that signaled his partner had gone into action, he burst through the back door and did what seemed to be a truly excellent job of ignoring the screams of the thugs injured and dying all around him.

Of course, he'd remember them with perfect clarity when he tried to sleep that night, but he could handle that so it didn't matter. His art was what would motivate him to start planning his escape from the Akatsuki, and not the cold sweat he'd wake up in later.
